They include selected pieces from the 'Ten Preludes' op.23 and the 'Thirteen Preludes' op.32, the 'Etudes - Tableaux' opp.33 and 39, the 'Six Moments Musicaux' op. 16, as well as various transcriptions for piano, the third movement of the "Cello Sonata' op.19 and the two songs 'Lilacs' and 'Melody' from op.21 set. But for all its popularity, Rachmaninov's Prelude is always performed as an excerpt from his five-movement Morceaux de fantasie from 1892 and the Morceaux, along with its companion, the six Moments musicaux from 1896, are nearly unknown to all but Rachmaninov's biggest fans. The preludes and Moments Musicaux on this disc give him ample opportunity to explore the 'dark side' of Rachmaninov, and bearing in mind what we know about Rachmaninov's own character, this emphasis seems to be completely justified. On this disc Lugansky presents the earlier opus 3 set of the preludes preceded by the famous opus 3/2 prelude.
